The minutes of the meeting of January 11, 2001 were approved as written.
The March meeting was moved from it's regular time on Thursday, March 8 to Tuesday, March 6, 7:30 a.m. at Grace Hall.
Director's Report:
Jennifer Younger discussed the status of the holdings of films in the Media Resources Center in DeBartolo and the Language Resource Center in O'Shaughnessy. Although many of the films in Media Resources are included in ALEPH not all are. Larry Rapagnani will investigate the status of including these films in the libraries' catalog and report back to Younger. Since the director of the Language Resource center is currently on leave, a decision on these films will be deferred. There was general agreement that it is desirable to have all films/videos included in ALEPH.
Jo Bessler reported on recent discussions within the libraries on "communities of users". The Hesburgh Library Reference Department is experiencing an increase of non-ND users of computer workstations, including unattended children. The Libraries are seeking solutions that will make sure ND users have adequate access, but that will also accommodate non-ND users.
Library Renovation and Compact Shelving:
Chemistry-Physics Librarian Thurston Miller presented an overview of compact shelving plans for the basement in Hesburgh Library. The compact shelving area will be open to patrons, except for the temporary Archives' collection; the Law library will store approximately 70,000 volumes for a period of 5 years; the Government Documents and the microtext collections will go to the basement. Criteria for material to go into the compact shelving area are currently being discussed. Roger Jacobs pointed out that splitting collections, by for example low use, cuts down on browsing capabilities. He recommended moving whole call number collections as a better alternative.
The meeting adjourned at 8:30 a.m. Next meeting: Tuesday, March 6, 7:30 a.m., Grace Hall.
Respectfully submitted,
Melodie Eiteljorge
