The Bioengineering Graduate Program was established by the Graduate School in January 2007, and currently has three alumni. This interdisciplinary program is based in the College of Engineering, and involves faculty from all five departments as well as from the department of Biological Sciences. The goal of the program is to provide an environment for students to receive training in a wide range of engineering and biological fields to prepare them for future careers in biomedical research. The NIH Bioengineering Consortium defines bioengineering research as follows:
"Bioengineering integrates physical, chemical, or mathematical sciences and engineering principles for the study of biology, medicine, behavior, or health. It advances fundamental concepts, creates knowledge from the molecular to the organ systems levels, and develops innovative biologics, materials, processes, implants, devices, and informatics approaches for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, for patient rehabilitation, and for improving health."
Prospective students should have an undergraduate degree in engineering or computer science. Students with an undergraduate degree in science or mathematics may also apply. Graduate admission applications can be submitted electronically.
