Participation in the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 183 to the Kerguelen Plateau and Broken Ridge (Indian Ocean) has resulted in a large number of basalt samples from this LIP.  Eight sites were drilled, 6 on the plateau proper and two on Broken Ridge.  All but one reached basaltic basement.  What is immediately apparent is the alkalic nature of the waning stages of plateau volcanism, especially at Site 1139 on the Kerguelen Plateau and at Site 1141 on Broken Ridge.  Evidence of a continental component in the basalts is seen in the geochemistry of the basalts from Sites 1137 and 1142.
