Ph.D., University of Wisconsin-Madison, (1982)
M.S., University of New Orleans ( 1979)
B.A., Indiana University of Pennsylvania (1977)
Dr. Hill took up a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Illinois after graduateing from Notre Dame, working with Professor Brent Roberts. Pat is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at Carleton University, teaching and writing in the area of health and personality psychology and various topics in life-span development.
Dr. Alfano joined our lab when he was a Fellow at the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study. He works in the interdisciplinary field of moral psychology, with an eye to exploiting the understanding of human nature afforded by the human sciences. His 2012 book Character as Moral Fiction (Cambridge) argues that virtue and vice attributions tend to function as self-fulfilling prophecies; and that the situationist challenge to virtue ethics should be co-opted, not resisted. Mark is currently an assistant professor of philosophy at the University of Oregon, and co-PI on a Templeton-funded grant on “intellectual humility.”
Paul Stey, Ph.D.
Dr. Stey’s research concerned how children and adults arrive at judgments about the moral qualities of actions, and to what degree these judgements are influenced by an understanding of causality and intentionality. Hew was also interested in the relationship between cognitive science and philosophy and how the two fields can be mutually informative. Paul defended his dissertation in Spring 2014 and has taken a research position with the Environmental Protection Agency.
