Izmit Earthquake

A SEAOI Dinner Discussion: February 29, 2000

SHAKY TOWN - Report on Izmit Earthquake

On August 17, 1999 a major earthquake (7.4 Richter Scale ) struck Izmit, Turkey, killing thousands of people and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless. Engineers traveled to Turkey to study the damage to assess the seismic destruction for an important understanding of the impact of the Izmit earthquake on the built environment.

SEAOI (Structural Engineers Association of Illinois) will hold a dinner meeting on Feb. 29, 2000 . The featured speaker will be Professor Mete Sozen, Purdue University. Dr. Sozen will report on his recent visit to Turkey and report on his assessment of the damage from the earthquake. (Attention Members: Dr. Kurama and Kenny Farrow of EERI@UND accompanied the group from Purdue on this Trip).

Since SEAOI dinner meetings are open to the public, we have been invited to attend by Bob Johnson, a contact made at one of last year's dinners.

The dinner will be held on at the 410 Club located in the Wrigley Building at 410 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago on Feb. 29th. Free parking is available behind the Wrigley Building on Rush Street, between Hubbard and Illinois Streets after 5:00 p.m. A cash bar will open at 5:15 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. The program is expected to begin at 7:00 p.m.
