Faculty Directory--Gearóid Ó Crualaoich
The Institute will welcome Gearóid Ó Crualaoich to the University as the '08-'09 Naughton Fellow. Professor Ó Crualaoich is a graduate of University College Cork and earned his graduate degree in Folklore at the University of Pennsylvania. He has studied as a Fulbright grant reciepient and worked as Associate Professor of Folklore and Ethnology at University College Cork. His most recent publication is The Book of the Cailleach, an analysis of the “wise woman” in the Irish oral tradition. Professor Ó Crualaoich, who established the Ethnology Department at the National University Cork, is regarded as the eminent senior folklorist in Ireland. In his long career, he been a visiting professor at Cornell, UCLA and Boston College. He has also served as the External Examiner in Scottish Ethnology at the University of Edinburgh. Along with, Diarmuid Ó Giolláin, who is visiting for the year, Professor Ó Crualaoich will not only contribute to the Department of Irish Language and Literature curriculum but address an identified need in the Irish Studies program for courses in Irish Folklore.
