Philip O'Leary received his PhD from the Department of Celtic Languages and Literatures at Harvard University. He has published on various aspects of early Irish sagas and the literature of the Irish cultural revival. Acknowledged as the world's leading expert on Twentieth-Century Irish prose writing and the discourse of political and cultural debate in Ireland, his recent book Gaelic Prose in the Irish Free State 1922-1939 received the Michael Durkan Prize in 2004. This study continued the literary and cultural history of the Irish revival begun in Prose Literature of the Gaelic Reviva 1881-1921 which won the Donald Murphy Prize at the American Conference for Irish Studies in 1994. In collaboration with Margaret Kelleher he co-edited the two-volume, dual language Cambridge History of Irish Literature.
