Conference Theme
The 2010 Latino Art Now! The New Wave/La Nueva Ola Conference seeks to assess the current contours of Latino art in the United States and its future directions. Panels will explore:

  • New directions in Latino Art in the United States;
  • Current opportunities and challenges faced by artists;
  • New developments in the institutional infrastructure of the US Latino art field (museums, community-based cultural organizations, archives, publications, teaching and training in academia; etc.);
  • Latino art and technology;
  • Documentation of Latino art and its historical evolution (periodization, movements, issues and styles);
  • Current artistic manifestations of specific geographic areas: the Caribbean, Central America, South America, and U.S. Latina/o artistic expression and the inter-relations among them and their entanglements with North American visual culture;
  • Critical evaluation of the production of individual artists and artists' groups;
  • The U.S. Latino art infrastructure;
  • Theoretical and cultural frameworks in the presentation/ reception of Latino art and media;
  • Latino art within a global context.

In addition, the conference will also be addressing how Latino art is assessed and valued within a global context. The meaning of valuation entails multiple considerations, including shared community cultural values, value in the museum world and value in the art market at large.

The two overarching conceptual aims are:
To explore Latino visual culture and its relationship to contemporary American visual culture and media;
To advance understanding, awareness, education of the aesthetic value/market of Latino art.
