Research Experiences for Undergrads, Summer 2011

I have had the pleasure of serving as the Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Notre Dame since August of 2001. One recent initiative has been the growth of collaborations with the Department of Psychology.

Undergraduate programs.
The Department offers two undergraduate degrees: the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and the Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. Our students are highly recruited by large and small companies from all around the country.

To help focus student interest in specializations and themes within computer science, I initiated the creation of multiple "Concentration" options. The first three concentrations represent collaborative efforts with other units on campus. The Concentration in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology is a collaborative effort with the Department of Biology. The Concentration in IT Leadership is a collaborative effort with the College of Business. The Concentration in Media Computing is a collaborative effort with the Department of Art and Design. The fourth Concentration, in Cloud Computing, is the newest and is a within-the-department concentration.

PhD program.
The number of students in the PhD program and number of PhDs graduated per year have both more than doubled from our 2001 level. Our department has averaged graduating over ten PhDs per year for the last five years. Approximately three quarters of our PhD students are supported by external grants.

Faculty.
The department faculty has grown by over 50%, expanded to include new research areas, become more demographically diverse, and developed a substantial emphasis on interdisciplinary research with collaborators outside of Computer Science and Engineering.
