Professional Codes as a Tool in Decision Making
Worksheet - Tuesday
Feedback from students regarding the textbook reading.  Answer whatever questions they have. (10 minutes)

Feedback and discussion of the web sites of the two professional organizations. (AITP, Association for Information Technology Professionals,  http://www.aitp.org/   ACM Association for Computing Machinery,  http://www.acm.org/ ) Which is "your" organization?  Why? (10 minutes)

Feedback and discussion of
  • Mount Union College "Computing Ethics Policy"
  • Raider Web Policy Document
  • Rules and Guidelines

(10 minutes)

Read and discuss the Toronto Resolution.  (The existence of the document is more important than the contents - at least for this exercise - 10 minutes)

Activity:
  • Divide the class into teams of two.  Ideally one person from IS and one from CS.  Select either the ACM or the AITP ethics statement and evolve it into a statement which expresses a code of conduct appropriate for Mount Union College computing students.
  • As a class select or evolve a code of conduct statement to which the entire class could agree

Additional remarks:   It is possible this can evolve into an activity that would take more time and effort.  Perhaps the statement could be taken to the CSIS department and the head of Computing Services for adoption.  Perhaps the discussion will need another day if the students are using the time in a way that the teacher feels is worthwhile.
