Our Project Mission
This EPICS group is working to hasten the replacement of common incandescent traffic signal lights with high-brightness light emitting diode (LED) technology. We endeavor to educate authorities across the State of Indiana about the significant benefits this technology provides in energy and maintenance savings, pollution reduction and enhanced safety.

Our overall goal is to promote and realize the benefits engineering can provide to society through outreach activities aimed at accelerating the adoption of this technology statewide. We are performing an analysis of the significant energy and maintenance savings provided by the LED devices in the local community and studying methods of financing the initial capital investment. We are working with city engineers and leaders to assist them in the process of adopting LED signal technology.

Our History
The Notre Dame Indiana LED Signal Adoption Study (ILEDSAS) group has been working with Dr. Hall each semester since the Fall of 2001 to get the word out about the merits of LED traffic signals and to encourage local cities to embrace the new technology through cutting-edge upgrade projects. The group’s success over the last three years is a testament to the students’ dedication to the cause and is a direct result of their hard work, genuine passion for learning, and unflagging drive for the success of the project.
