RESEARCH INTERESTS

I am interested in the molecular-scale interactions of aqueous ions with mineral and bacterial surfaces, including complexation, sorption, incorporation, surface-controlled precipitation, and redox reactions. These processes are studied in the environmental and biogeochemical context of metal, metalloid, and radionuclide transformations resulting from bacterial activity in the subsurface. I employ synchrotron x-ray spectroscopy (XANES and EXAFS) to determine the speciation and molecular structure around the metals. I am also developing and applying x-ray fluorescence and tomography imaging techniques at the micron and sub-micron scale.
