2004-2006: Lucas Torres
Dr. Torres’ main area of research entails examining the process of cultural adaptation and its effects on mental health among Latinos living in the U.S. This has involved investigating the role of acculturation and competence-based variables as predictors of depression, acculturative stress, and self-esteem. A current research project is investigating the influence of perceived discrimination on the development of intercultural competence and indicators of well-being among Latino university students. Another broad area of interest includes studying help-seeking pathways among a community sample of Latinos. The purpose of this project is to identify the socio- and psychocultural variables that facilitate and hinder Latino individuals from seeking professional services when experiencing psychological distress.
