Maria Cowan

Maria is a senior from Austin, Texas majoring in Civil Engineering. Participating in service work has been a big part of her career at Notre Dame. She enrolled in a community based learning class her freshman year and soon after joined the Circle K service group. She has participated in two service trips through the Center for Social Concerns, one to New Orleans during fall break 2006 to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the second to Appalachia during spring break 2009 to help families negatively affected by coal mining. She currently serves on the Social Concerns Committee in Student Government helping to implement service projects on campus. She is really energized about the ND SEED project especially since it will be her last service venture as an undergraduate. Beyond service work, Maria does research with Dr. Khandelwal in his Computational Physics and Structural Simulation Lab. She previously worked on finite element modeling of concrete structures under thermal loading this past summer and is currently working on the structural response of steel members to fire loads. She is a member of the engineering organizations ASCE and SHPE, where she serves as secretary.
