Researchers in the Cognition, Learning, and Development (CLAD) Lab study cognitive development, with a primary focus on how children think, learn, and solve problems in mathematics. We use the methods and tools of cognitive science to answer basic questions about mathematical cognition while also grappling with real educational problems that parents and teachers face when making decisions about how best to present information to children in formal and informal learning environments. In this way, we embody the mission of Notre Dame's Institute for Educational Initiatives to improve education for all children, particularly those who have been historically underserved. Our research team includes students who are interested in studying psychology; neuroscience; and education, schooling, and society at the undergraduate level and cognition, brain, and behavior and developmental science at the graduate level. Our graduate students have the opportunity to be part of a vibrant, interdisciplinary education sciences community through the ND PIER program. Every member of our team strives to uphold our lab's mission and values.
