*Note: “Sweeping” a room doesn’t require a broom. It
consists of pressing the Room Clearing Alarm button, starting the warning noise
in the room. A timer is then started allowing typically 30 seconds until the
room door must be closed and locked. The purpose is to force the experimenter
to walk through the room (the button is placed across the room from the door)
checking for anyone still in the room. The time delay is to insure that there
is only minimum delay between starting the alarm and closing the door so that
no one can slip into the room after the button is pressed but before the door
is closed.

Operational Procedures
To operate accelerator:
1) Check that both vault emergency stop
buttons/switches are disengaged
2) Sweep and lock vault (press initialize button and close and lock gate within time allotted)
3) Put vault key in console box and turn
4) Belt may now be started
5) Put all beam stops in
6) Turn on charging
To put beam into target room:
1) check to be sure emergency stop button in ion source area is disengaged
2) Put chain in place across door 10
3) Sweep and lock target room (press initialize button and close and lock gate 3 within allotted time).
4) Put keys 10 and 3 into console box
5) Remove beam stop
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Entering Target Room while running
No Override
Take door 3 key from panel – beam stops will go in
Open door 3 – accelerator belt and charging stay on
---
Sweep and lock room
Put door 3 key in panel
Remove beam stop and continue running
Override
Put door 3 override key in panel
Take door 3 key from panel – beam stop will remain out
Open door 3 – accelerator keeps running, beam stops remain out
---
Close door 3
Put door 3 key back in panel
Remove door 3 override key from panel
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Entering Vault while running
No Override
Take vault key from panel – charging will shut off
Put vault key into door box and turn to unlock door, open door – belt will shut off
---
Sweep and lock vault. Green light on key box will indicate vault swept and locked
Put vault key in console box – belt may now be restarted. Charging may be turned on if target room still swept and locked or if beam stops are in.
Override
Put vault override key in console panel
Take vault key from panel – charging will shut off
Put vault key in door box and turn to unlock door, open door – belt will keep
running
---
Close vault door and remove key from box – vault stays “swept and locked”
Put vault key in console box – charging may be turned back on if target room still
swept and locked or if beam stops are in.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emergencies
Pressing red emergency button outside vault or throwing switch inside vault will
immediately turn off belt and charging and disengage door latch.
Pressing red emergency button in ion source area will release yellow chain across
door 10 and put in beam stops. Removing chain turns on room lights. If beam
stops are not signaling that they are in when chain is removed, charging will be shut off.
Resuming running will require resetting emergency button and sweeping and
locking room again. Resetting the emergency button will prevent chain from being reinserted without key. Key 10 must be brought from console to reinsert chain and then room sweep sequence repeated after chain replaced.

Use of Maintenance Key
The maintenance key is to be used ONLY to allow operation of both belt motors and charging supplies on the JN and KN accelerators. Turning the key in the box in the vault (the same box with the button pressed to initiate locking the vault) will cause both belt and charge enable lights on the Control Box to come on. There is also a red LED which will be flashing while the maintenance key is in use.
Turning the maintenance key will also disable the vault-locking alarm button, preventing locking the vault for normal running when in maintenance mode.
Note the
maintenance mode is to be used ONLY during open-tank maintenance of the
accelerators. It is NEVER to be used during normal running.
