Early Signs of Alcohol Problems

If you're like most college students you probably believe you'll never become alcoholic. If you use alcohol you probably think, "I can handle it - no problem."  Yet, more than 50% of college students who do drink experience some significant problem or problems related to their drinking.  And all college students experience problems related to other students' abuse of alcohol. You, yourself, may even have early signs of alcohol abuse. You can take a self-test to find out.

You may be surprised to learn that approximately 15% or more of college students abuse alcohol at levels that indicate a significant alcohol abuse problem.  Find out about the symptoms of Alcohol Abuse or Alcohol Dependence.

Even if you seldom drink there are some things you should know about the dangers associated with alcohol use on college campuses that may have a substantial impact on your health and success as a student. Binge drinkers and frequent binge drinkers are even more likely to experience serious problems associated with the misuse and abuse of alcohol. For women there are special concerns regarding consumption of alcohol you should consider.

If you're concerned about your own use of alcohol or a friend's use and want help deciding what to do next, consider contacting either the University Counseling Center or the Office of Alcohol and Drug Education.
