The Fighting Irish coming off their first loss in 36 games came out flat
in the first half against Santa Clara. The Bronco's midfielder Samantha Obara
had two scoring opportunites early in the first half but was stopped both times.
The obara's second shot was deflected over the crossbar by Notre Dame's Holly
Manthei. The Bronco's continued to hammer away at the Irish and produced their
best scoring opportunities at the 26 minute mark. The Bronco's Mikka Hansen broke free inside the Irish's box and set a blast that hit the far post from 12 yards out. A few moments later Hansen again had scoring opportunity but Goalkeeper Jen Renola made a fabulous play punching the header over the goal.
The Irish regrouped at half time and then showed why they are one of the best Women's Soccer Teams in College. They came out and controlled the tempo of the game in the second half. Only 6 minutes into the second half the Irish found the back of the Bronco's goal. The goal came when Freshman sensation Monica Gerardo slipped by the Bronco's defense and took a feed from Senior Michelle McCarthy. It was Monica's 15th goal of the season and her third goal of the weekend. A few minutes later Notre Dame's Rosella Guerrero blasted one at point blank range but the Bronco's Goalkeeper Sanchez made a spectacular save. With this win over Santa Clara, Irish Goalkeeper Jen Renola earned her
nineth shutout of the season.
