WVFI Radio

The Voice of the Fighting Irish

About WVFI

WVFI is the University of Notre Dame's only student-run radio station. While WVFI is currently broadcast via the internet at http://wvfi.nd.edu, it hasn't always been that way. Founded by parent company WSND, WVFI was originally called WSND-AM, as the partner station of WSND-FM. The two stations split, and WSND-AM became WVFI: the Voice of the Fighting Irish. In 2000, WVFI decided to broadcast online. To listen to WVFI, click on the "On Air" link at the top of the page or the "Listen Live Here" link to the right.

Most of the music played on WVFI is independent label "college rock" music, but we also feature programming slots of hip hop, punk rock, hardcore, classic rock, comedy/talk, and sports talk. To see what kind of music is played when, or who the current DJs are, click on the "Show Schedule" link at the top of your browser.

As of the 2005-06 school year, we had a staff of over 130 students broadcasting daily from 10AM to 1:30AM. Because all of our DJs and sports broadcasters are students, we are off air mid-May through early September. We receive an average of 50 CDs per week, most of which are released on independent labels. We chart weekly to CMJ, the College Media Journal ( http://www.cmj.com ).

WVFI is run by an Executive Board made entirely of students. For information on the current student leaders, see the "Board" link. Additionally, all of WVFI's funding comes from the Student Activities Office. Our faculty Media Advisor is Laurie McFadden, and our faculty Station Engineer is Ed Jaroszewski.

WVFI also sponsors on-campus concerts in conjunction with Legends of Notre Dame ( http://www.legendsofnotredame.org ). Bands WVFI has brought to Notre Dame include The Unicorns, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Erin McKeown, Pedro the Lion, Hey Mercedes, and Will Oldham.

Famous WVFI staffers include ND head football coach Charlie Weis ('78), who worked as a Sports Broadcaster, and nationally-acclaimed musician Ted Leo ('94), who was a DJ and a Music Director.
