Should I run?

Time Commitment

Being a AAA officer has developed over the past few years, for better or for worse, into a very hefty time commitment for students. You must use your best judgment to determine if you will have time for this activity.

We have no way to prevent you from running for prominent offices in other cultural clubs, or any major club for that matter, but we highly discourage it based on the past experience of other AAA officers.

A Word on "Experience"

Because recent officers like Greg, Paula, and Vince have stuck around on the AAA board for many years, you might be afraid to run because of a lack of "experience."  But in a way, "experience" is overrated.  Budgeting, maintaining websites, and navigating the bureaucratic waters of SAO are skills that can be learned on the job.

Case in point.  Paul Nguyen '07 was elected president with no prior experience as a AAA officer, but he decided to run because he loved the friends he had made and desired to bring together marginal individuals across campus into an Asian American family. His term in office saw AAA awarded the title of 2005-2006 ND student organization of the year.

If you think you're too "young," you should note that the 2004-2005 board had a very successful year with 9 out of 10 officers being sophomores.  And nearly all boards in recent history have been made up of a sophomore majority.

So. The moral of the story is... If you are good-natured, compassionate, and generous, go for it!  Don't let anything stop you from running, even for president.
