“Cassone Adimari”: painting of an Italian wedding procession for the marriage of Boccacio Adimari and Lisa Ricasoli (1420) or possibly the Martelli-Adimari marriage (1440) on the front panel of a cassone (wedding chest), ca. 1450, painted by “Lo Scheggia,” the younger brother of Tommaso Cassai Masaccio. Florence, Accademia Gallery. In the detail of the left half of the painting can be seen a typical “alta” ensemble, that is, an ensemble of “high” (loud) instruments, in this case two shawms and a slide trumpet. Such ensembles were commonly used to provide music for dancing in the fifteenth century.
