- Joseph Pieper, Happiness and Contemplation (St.
Augustine's Press) (ISBN: 978-1890318314) (1958)

print: .pdf provided by instructors) (1960)
- Romano Guardini, The Lord (Gateway
Editions) (ISBN: 978-0895267146) (1954)
Requirements:
- Four Short papers (60% of course
grade).
Each student will be
required to write four 5-page papers on different sections of
Guardini's The Lord.
The first paper, on themes related to Advent and Christmas (pp. 3-29), will be due on 2/2.
The
second paper, on themes related to Ordinary Time (pp. 89-174),
will be due on 3/4. The third paper, on themes related to Lent (pp. 405-468),
will be due on
3/30. The fourth paper, on themes related to Easter (pp. 471-532), will be due on 4/22. On the days
when a paper is due, the classroom discussion will focus on the
parts of Guardini's
book that you have just written on.
- Class
Participation (40% of course grade). This
consists of two separate things:
(a) You must submit to us by email, before 9:00AM on each class day, a
question/comment based on the readings assigned for that day.
(On days when papers are due about Guardini's The Lord, your
paper counts as your question/comment.) We expect the
questions/comments to be well thought
out and well articulated, though fairly short. They will
serve as a partial
guide for our class comments on the day in question.
(We pay
close
attention to the quality of these questions in determining the
participation component of the grade.)
(b) Active and intelligent participation in seminar discussions.
In general, student initiative and signs of self-motivation
will
be rewarded in this course.
