Course description: The first semester of this basic graduate algebra sequence will cover standard results about groups, ring and modules over rings.

Textbook: There is no "official textbook" in the sense that I will likely follow several sources. I will write up notes. You might find useful the following books:

Homework: There will be weekly problem sets. You are free to collaborate with other students in the class in solving the problems, but you must write up all your solutions on your own.

Exams: There will be a midterm exam and a final exam.

Final grade:The final grade will be computed as a weighted average: 40% homework, 30% midterm, 30% final exam.
