Statement #1:
The Government has the right to make laws controlling access to the Internet.

Statement #2:
The Government has the right to filter/censor information on the Internet in interest of national security.

The survey data was obtained through an online survey which can be viewed here. The interviewees were divided into groups by their relative age (students and parents) and by the average amount of time they spend on the Internet each week (less or more than 10 hours). Two statements were made concerning the Internet and U.S. Government.

Highlights of the study show:
  • 78% of the total respondents said the Government has the right to filter the Internet in interest of National Security.
  • Over 50% of the respondents who use the Internet less than 10 hours a week said they have no problem with the Government making laws regarding the net.
  • The results between the parents and students who used the Internet for similar amounts of time were nearly statistically identical for the second statement.
  • The parents were 13% more tolerant of the Government making laws concerning the Net than students.

In conclusion, the Notre Dame respondents do not have a problem with Government Intervention on the Internet. You should keep in mind that this was an extremely small, homogeneous sample and is not meant to represent the views of the general public.
