Dealing with Solubility Equilibria
Slightly soluble ionic compounds
Ion-Product Expressions (Qsp); Solubility-Product Constants (Ksp)
PbSO4(s) Pb2+(aq) + SO42-(aq)
Qc = [Pb2+][SO4 2-]/[PbSO4]
Qsp = [Pb2+][SO42-]
At saturation, Qsp attains a constant value (equilibrium
has been established); thus, Qsp = Ksp
Generally, for a saturated solution of a slightly soluble ionic compound
with formula MpXq: Qsp = [Mn+]p[Xz-]q = Ksp
