Complex Ions of Amphoteric Hydroxides
Amphoteric hydroxides: compounds that dissolve very little in water
but to a much greater extent in acidic and basic solutions
Al(OH)3(s) Al3+(aq) + 3OH-(aq) Ksp = 3 x 10-34
Al(OH)3 dissolves in acid: 3H3O+(aq) + 3OH- (aq) 6H2O(l)
Al(OH)3 dissolves in base through the formation of a complex ion:
Al(OH)3(s) + OH-(aq) Al(OH)4-(aq)
Al(OH)3(s) + 3H3O+(aq) Al3+(aq) + 6H2O(l)
