Pyroxene Exsolution Features

Sample F34a: Gabbro



These two photomicrographs are of the same feature in cross polarized light. The second picture is rotated ~30 degrees couter-clockwise.  The clinopyroxene exhibits exsolution only in the center or core of the crystal.  The outer regions are "exsolution-free" and are the result of an overgrowth.  Therefore, the core of the cpx grew as a cumulus mineral in this gabbro and the rims represent overgrowths from intercumulus liquid.  This situation is seen in the three photomicrographs shown below.
