Transform
Faults
Transform faults transform motion from one plate boundary to another.
Mid-ocean ridges are broken into numerous segments by transform faults.
The principal movement along these faults is horizontal.
Note: the apparent sense of movement on a transform fault may be different
that the actual sense of movement.
Example – Figure 17.6
shows the apparent offset of the ridges is right-lateral, but because of
the divergence process, the actual movement is left-lateral (as shown by
the arrows). Furthermore, movement is taking place only between the two segments
of the offset ridge.
