Implementing Environmental Protection: How Regulation Created Opportunity in the Solid Waste Industry August 30, 2018

In 1993, EPA enacted new regulations which drove significant improvement, but also fundamental change in the solid waste industry.  The regulations drove nationwide technical standardization, and changed the new business model for this critical service industry.   Implementing these regulations created many opportunities, and many changes.

Joe Benco is the Vice President, Engineering Technical Support for Republic Services, Inc.  During his 20 year career with the Company, he oversaw the company’s environmental construction and remediation for active and closed landfills, construction and monitoring of landfill gas extraction systems, and contract management for landfill gas to energy projects.  Prior to joining Republic Services, Joe had multiple roles within the Engineering Consulting Industry. 
Joe is an active member of the Environmental Research and Education Foundation, a foundation which funds and directs scientific research and educational initiatives for waste management practices.  Joe is the Chair of the Projects Committee, which currently funds over $1 million annually in related academic environmental research. 
Joe holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, and is a Registered Professional engineer in multiple states.
