Southern Louisiana and Mississippi Coastal Protection Field Trip
University of Notre Dame Civil Engineering Junior Class
November 5 – November 8, 2006

Sponsors:  Murphy Travel Fund; University of Notre Dame Department of Civil Engineering and Geological Sciences; US Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans District; US Army Engineer Research and Development Center

Hosts: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center

Organizers: Joannes J. Westerink, Peter C. Burns, Chris Gilmore, Jeffrey W. Talley, Diane Westerink

The Southern Louisiana and Mississippi region, vital to our nation's economy and culture, presents critical scientific and engineering challenges in the areas of riverine and delta morphology, plate tectonics, hydraulic engineering, structural and soils engineering, and marshland ecology and environmental engineering. The specific purpose of the trip is to develop an understanding of the delta and marshes, of the engineered structures that protect the infrastructure in the coastal floodplain, of the recent failures, and of the science and engineering that are going on to build a better and safer flood protection system.
