Class notes
Read through pages 39-49 of the notes and view the online narration below. Don't forget to complete the quiz in Canvas!
The main points of the lecture were
- Cooling Fins
- Summary of heat transfer coefficients (so far)
Goals:
After this class you should be able to:
- Determine the rate of heat transfer due to a cooling fin or rod.
- Know where heat transfer coefficients come from in various geometries.
Reading
- The class notes.
- BS&L, 10.7, 10.8
Problem of the Day
In this problem we look at the temperature distribution in a cooling fin, but where the heat loss is via radiation only (e.g., in space). A back of the envelope scaling analysis is given here and the numerical program to solve the differential equation is given here which calls the little function miss.m.
Demonstration:
Cooling from a rod: temperature as a function of position in the presence of forced convection. The notes describing the analysis - including an analysis which looks at errors in our approximations - is given here and the little plotting program is rodplot.m.
