Class notes
Read through pages 326-340 of the notes and view the online narration below. Don't forget to complete the quiz in Canvas!
The main points of the lecture were
- Concentration Polarization
- Taylor Dispersion for Simple Shear Flow with Polarization
- Asymmetric Flow Field Flow Fractionation (AF4)
Goals:
After this class you should be able to:
- Calculate the thickness of a concentration polarization layer.
- Understand how Taylor Dispersion results from polarization and shear.
- Calculate the design criteria for an AF4 separation device.
Reading
- The class notes.
- The classic 1987 paper from the Giddings group given here.
- The Wikipedia article on Field Flow Fractionation.
- The Wikipedia article devoted to the AF4 technique.
Problem of the Day:
In this problem we will look at using MC to simulate the separation of two solutes with different diffusivities in a shear flow. The notes for this are given here and the code is pod23af4sim.m. As a bonus, I've also included the notes on the method of moments calculation of the Taylor dispersivity in this geometry.
