Cheg 355 - Lecture Notes - Oct. 17, 2002
Announcements
Due to the AIChE meeting, class will be cancelled on November 5. I will be making
up this class during the review session on Monday, October 28 - the first Monday after
break. We'll cover some new material as well as going over the homework
assignment.

Scanned Notes
The main points of the lecture were
Goals:
After this class you should be able to:
- Scale the transport equations to get the Reynolds Lubrication Equation.
- Apply this equation to calculate the forces in simple lubrication flows.
Reading
- The class notes.
- WWWR, chapter 11; BS&L, chapter 4
- Multi-Media Fluid Mechanics: Work through Kinematics: Pathlines.
Additional Readings:
Lubrication flows are just one example of flows at low Reynolds numbers where
inertia may be neglected. One active area of research in low Re system is the field of
microfluidics, in which chemical laboratories are reduced to a microscale and reactants
are pumped around through microchannels etched on a chip. An article describing
some of the applications of such flows is given
here.
