Scanned Notes
The main points of the lecture were
Goals:
After this class you should be able to:
- Calculate head loss in a piping network.
- Read a pump curve.
- Know what NPSHR is and how to avoid frying a pump.
Reading
- The class notes.
- WWWR, chapter 14; BS&L, chapters 6&7
- Multi-Media Fluid Mechanics: Boundary Layers: Instability, Transition & Turbulence.
Additional Readings:
Our friends from Australia have put together a 'Pump School' which has all the
information you would ever want to know about sizing pumps and reading pump
curves. The link to Sykes Pump School is given
here.
It would be a -really- good idea to review it if you are ever in charge of sizing a pump!
Samples of pump curves (for Sykes pumps, of course) are given
here.
Just click on one of the links for a .pdf file such as we looked at in class. Other links are
available on the web for pipe fittings. A useful one is given
here. Examination of
the data shows the K factors -do- change a little bit with diameter, but not very much!
