CBE 30355 - Lecture Notes - Sept. 7, 2017

Class notes
Scanned Notes
The main points of the lecture were
- Conservation of Mass in Multicomponent Systems
Goals:
After this class you should be able to:
- Solve simple mixing/dilution problems.
- Set up and solve general first order linear ODE problems.
Reading
- The class notes.
- BS&L, chapter 2
Additional Readings:
In class we've been dealing with conservation of mass and the continuity equation.
Perhaps the ultimate in matter conservation problems is the study of cosmology - the
evolution of the universe we live in. An interesting guide to the current theory of
cosmic evolution from the Big Bang to the present is given
here.
Demonstration:
In class today we demonstrated a soap-driven motorboat. When surfactant is released at the back of the boat, it drastically reduces the surface tension in that area. The higher surface tension at the front of the boat pulls the boat forward. Because the water surface gets coated with surfactant, though, this is a demo which only works once!
