Junior Women's Foil Team Preliminaries

It was a beautiful day in South Bend. Many of the competitors enjoyed a walk along the St. Joseph river.

The members of the US Junior Women's Foil Team confer prior to a semifinal match with Poland. The team members were Andrea Ament, Emily Cross, Erinn Smart, and Gold Medalist Iris Zimmermann.

Erinn Smart was first up for the US. Her opponents on the Polish team were Sylwia Gruchala, Alicja Kryczalo, Wieckonska, and Margorzata Wojtkowiak.

Gold Medalist Iris Zimmermann was second up for the US and put her team in the lead.

The US team gathers with their coach to discuss strategy after Poland takes a commanding 35-29 lead.

It's up to Iris, as the US takes an eight touch deficit into the final period.

While Iris made up some ground, the lead was too much to overcome and the US fell to Poland 45-39. The competitors shake hands after the match.

It was a different story in the Bronze Medal match against Germany. Iris was again down entering the final period, this time by only four touches. A 9-2 run resulted in a tough 45-42 loss for the Germans.

The US Junior Women's Foil Team is congratulated by their teammates for winning the Bronze Medal!
