Note: This is an extra credit/bonus assignment, so it is completely optional. If you choose not to do it, you will not lose any point on your final grade. If you choose to do it, you will have a chance to get 2 bonus credits on top of your final grade.

Assignment

Purpose: This bonus critical review assignment is designed to help you practice critical thinking, understand how to challenge other's work in a professional way, and learn how to write a review of a research paper.

Task: Please write a critical review on one of the following research papers that study the related topics on computer networks that are extensions of the ones we discussed in lectures
  • Review Paper 1: Does the IEEE 802.11 MAC Protocol Work Well in Multihop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks?

  • Review Paper 2: QoS Issues in Ad Hoc Wireless Networks

  • Review Paper 3: IPACT: A Dynamic Protocol for an Ethernet PON (EPON)

    • Format: 300~500 words, Font: Times New Roman, 12 point, Single Space

    A good review will address the following questions
  • What is the main problem the paper tries to address?

  • What are the state-of-the-art solutions and what is the knowledge gap?

  • What is the paper's approach, design, or argument to address the proposed problem?

  • What are the pros and cons of the paper's approach and method? Or justify whether you agree or disagree with the paper's position/statement on the studied problem.

  • What is your idea to address the limitation of the paper? Or What are the insights/inspirations you get from the paper to address similar problems in networks?

  • What are the remaining problems/challenges to be addressed in this area?


    • Note: The last 3 questions are critical thinking questions, your review should focus on addressing these questions.

    Submission Instructions

    If you decide to do this extra credit assignment, please email Prof. Wang with title of the paper you choose to review by Nov. 29 (Thu).

    Create a PDF file of your review and submit it to dropbox. Place your name and netid at the beginning of the file. Copy the file into dropbox/your_netid/review/review_netid.pdf. The final review submission deadline is December 5 (Wed) by class time.
