Footnotes: Introduction
1The «artes liberales»—arts befitting a free man—of late antiquity consisted of the «trivium» (grammar, rhetoric, dialectics) and the «quadrivium» (arithmetic, geometry, music, astronomy). They formed the basis of education until medieval Scholasticism deemphasized their value and replaced them with the study of philosophy and theology.
