You will make a three different compositions working from three Adobe Illustrator template files. They are 9xCircles.ai, 9xDiag.ai, and 9xSquares.ai. The files can be downloaded from a link in the third column.

Make 9 symbols work together as a unified set

procedure

Use the templates provided (next column). Delete elements from the shapes in order to create unique symbols that function well as individuals, together as a family, and where the negative spaces that are created by removing elements do not overpower the 9 positive forms. No two symbols in the set can be the same.

Think of the “one of these symbols doesn’t belong here” game as a way of looking for symbols that don’t fit.
