Course description & grading policy Topic. This seminar will take on a number of different topics about the nature of action. These will include: the nature of intentional action, and its relation to mental states like belief, desire, and intention; the possibility of believing things at will and other mental actions; and the existence and nature of freedom of the will. We will also discuss the relationship between free action and intentional action. Texts. All readings will be made available in PDF form via links from the course syllabus. If you are having trouble accessing the reading, some help is available here. Assignments. In adition to midterm and final exams, students will write a term paper. The term paper will be ue at the end of the semester, though all students will be required to submit drafts of their papers earlier in the semester. Each of these three assignments will be worth 30% of the final grade. The remaining 10% of the grade will be given on the basis of attendance and participation. Each assignment is required, in the sense that failure to complete one or more assignments is sufficient reason for failing the course.
