The second paper will be due in conferences on Friday, March 31. You have a choice between two topics, which are as follows:

1. Is the existence of God compatible with the evil that we find in the world? Take into account Swinburne's response to this problem. Is Swinburne's reply to the problem convincing? Why or why not? Can you think of a better reply?

2. Is free will compatible with determinism? Take into account Frankfurt's argument against the principle of alternate possibilities and van Inwagen's argument from the 'no choice principle.' Can you think of any further arguments to support your view?

The paper should be 5 double-spaced pages in length, with reasonable margins and font.

The paper will be worth 30% of your grade. For each day that the paper is late, you will lose 5% of your grade.

You need not consult any readings other than those which are assigned for the course. If you do consult any other books, articles, or web pages, you must, on pain of plagiarism, cite all of them in a "Works Cited" list at the end. If you have any questions about what plagiarism is, you should consult McGill's policy on plagiarism.

If you have any further questions, you should feel free to contact me or the TA in charge of the conference to which you have been assigned. If you'd like some guidance on how to approach writing a philosophy paper, see the links here.
