Second paper

The second paper will be due in conferences on Friday, April 1. The topic of the paper is as follows:

In class, we have distinguished three different kinds of views about the nature of the self: (1) views which identify persons with immaterial souls, (2) views which identify persons with minds (sets of psychological characteristics), and (3) views which identify persons with their bodies. We have also discussed objections to each of these three kinds of views. In your paper, say which sort of view you think is the most plausible. and clearly state the view you wish to defend. Then say how you would reply to two or more objections to your view. The objections may be from class, the reading, or of your own invention.

The paper should be a maximum of 1500 words in length, which is about five pages with normal font, spacing, and margins. You need not use any texts beyond those assigned in the course (though you may if you wish to). You must cite every source you use for the paper. If you have questions about how to do this, check here.

Since grading of these papers will likely not be completed until after the end of classes, you must indicate on your paper if you would like to pick it up. Your TA will only put comments on your paper if you do.

The paper will be worth 30% of your grade, and will be graded from 1-30. For each day that the paper is late, 1 point will be deducted from your grade.

If you have any questions, you should feel free to contact me or the TA in charge of your conference.
