SOC 63578: Social Movements and Politics Training Seminar

(aka Studies in Politics And Movements)

Spring 2013

Description & Format

This seminar is designed to expose people to debates, issues, and topics in the social movements and contentious politics scholarship (broadly defined) and to provide feedback on research projects and papers. Presenters should send their papers to Kraig Beyerlein (seminar organizer) who will distribute them to other participants. Please send your paper to Kraig (or the seminar listserv [see link below]) no later than a week before you are scheduled to present so people have sufficient time to read it and prepare comments. Though it is not required, presenters may choose to introduce their papers. Please keep any introductory remarks to 5 minutes or less (the expectation is that everyone has read your paper carefully!). Discussants are asked to limit their remarks to about 10 minutes and to focus on the paper's broader themes. After the discussants finish, the floor is open and everyone is encouraged to give the presenter additional feedback. Each session lasts for an hour, and the custom is for discussants to bring snacks to share with others. Something from Breadsmith has become a popular option, but anything edible is acceptable. If you have any questions about the seminar, please email Kraig (see contact information below).
