The North America Nebula

Click on photo for larger image.

This nebula complex is 1800 light-years away, about 100 light-years wide, and is probably energized by the bright star Deneb. The nebulosity covers a patch of sky ten times bigger than the full moon. To the right is the Pelican nebula, though in reality it is one large glowing region with intervening dark dust lanes. The image is made using narrow band filters for emmisions from sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen (Sii, Ha, OIII) combined using the Hubble pallette.
