The cluster in the middle of the nebula is composed of stars formed from the nebular material about 4 million years ago. The stellar winds from these new stars are now clearing the nebula's center. The red color is the result of glowing hydrogen gas. The Rosette, in the constellation Monoceros, is 5000 light-years distant and 100 light-years across.
