§ 1. EXTREME REALISM (FIRST HALF OF TWELFTH CENTURY).

Division. -- In the first half of the twelfth century we have to note a revival of that curiously illogical form of extreme realism which attributes a universal entity to our specific and generic concepts, while refusing to admit the pantheistic unity of all things. We may divide the realist theories of this period into two main groups: (1) the theory of William of Champeaux; (2) that of the school of Chartres.
