§ 2. METHOD AND METHODS

87. Method. -- Diversity of Scientific Methods. -- Method (methodos) means road; a scientific method is the road which leads to a science.

It varies with the nature of the various sciences to which it leads: synthetic or analytic accordingly. Still, it may be said that the scientific method is on the whole a mixed one, analytico-synthetic.{1}

This section will treat of the respective methods of (I) the abstract sciences, (II) the experimental, (III) philosophy.

{1} The analytico-synthetic are the constructive methods of science. Nothing will be said here of the methods of teaching, the didactic methods. See Higher Course, vol. I.
