The Aristotelian conception of politics is so wide and wise as to include all experiences affecting "the common interest," all the various activities "useful for the purposes of life." In any human society, the nature and function of art is, as Aristotle recognized, a problem of the greatest interest and importance. It is in this Aristotelian spirit that the editors present this essay, delivered in January of this year at the University of Chicago.
