Reflection

For this week, you are to consider the following questions as we explore issues related to engineering disasters and whistleblowing:

  1. Are engineering disasters merely technical accidents or are they failures of leadership?

  2. Are engineers, software developers, or technology workers obligated to always speak the truth? Should the truth be made public?

  3. When is moral or ethical to remain silent on wrongdoing? Who determines what is consider wrongdoing?

  4. Should we admonish or celebrate whistleblowers? When are they worthy of protection?

Note, you should not simply list the questions and answer each one directly. Instead, the questions are there to help you brainstorm about the question:

According to Roger Boisjoly, "[whistleblowing] destroyed [his] career, [his] life, everything else." What good, then, is whistleblowing?

Your writing reflection should ultimately answer this question.
