1792        Baker 19                          Roman Head Cent - electrotype copy

    Obverse:  WASHINGTON    PRESIDENT .    1792
    Reverse:   CENT
    Edge: plain

    Weight:  209.1 g   (13.54 grams)             Diameter:  28.88 mm           Reverse die alignment: 360°

Comments:  Listed by Fuld as WA.1792.3. This is an electrotype copy from one of the some twenty original coins. The edge of this copy is plain. Originals are 30mm in diameter, weight 196-198.5 grains and contain a lettered edge reading, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA . X . X . X ." A small test cut was made on the rim of this example at about 7:00 o'clock (at the W) showing the copy to be made of lead rather than copper. The reverse displays a crack from the edge at 3:00 o'clock travelling erratically through the wings and shield continuing to rim on the opposite side at 9:00 o'clock. Several small defects are present, as the dot at the A and O in WASHINGTON on the obverse, but these may be only in the copy. These defects do not appear in the color photograph of the original Roman Head cent sold by Bowers and Ruddy in the 1981 Garrett auction as lot 1711.

Provenance:  Acquired through the Robert H. Gore, Jr. Numismatic Endowment from the EANA auction of May 23, 1998, lot 657.
